Debbie Tikao and Huia Reriti will take us through a must-attend kōrero and journey with the Matapopore Charitable Trust – sensitively weaving the cultural design integration process with an array of emotive stakeholders and artists into better rebuild outcomes for Canterbury post earthquakes.
The Matapopore Charitable Trust was established by Ngāi Tūāhuriri to work with Ōtākaro Ltd, Regenerate Christchurch and Christchurch City Council (CCC) to provide cultural advice on Ngāi Tūāhuriri /Ngāi Tahu values, narratives and aspirations, and to weave these into the fabric of the anchor projects and other projects associated with the recovery of greater Christchurch. Ngāi Tūāhuriri is the local Ngāi Tahu sub-tribe (hapū) that holds mana whenua (traditional rights and responsibilities) over the Christchurch CBD.
Continuing at the cutting edge of cultural design integration, Debbie Tikao will also share a Q&A with the audience on recent developments with respect to the built environment industry that aim to assist a new generation of architects, designers and builders to better partner with iwi / hapū to achieve outcomes which reflect our dual histories and world views.

The panel will discuss the importance of all of the stages of the building lifecycle, from the need to get it right from the start, from the infrastructure that goes into the ground (water) and roads built (to get fire trucks there), to design, construction/installation, maintenance and management (including the vulnerability of occupants etc.). They will discuss some of the big issues of the importance of product compliance, why managing and maintaining buildings is essential and all the steps in between. Holistic fire safety is important, and everyone has a part to play, from the person on the end of a mastic gun to the manager of the building doing weekly checks of the fire doors and daily checks of the escape routes. Future challenges, such as intensification and emerging risks, such as energy storage systems, must be predicted.

If we believe economist and some journalists, our New Zealand economy has to brace for a recession. Facilities managers have battled Covid, the increasing cost of living, labour and material supply shortages and spiralling interest rates. This brings many challenges as well as opportunities in the current NZ FM market. Jack will provide an overview on what’s going to impact FM operations in the next few years as well as how FM managers can provide value to their business. Jack will present on a FM maturity review approach which will give insight in your FM capability at present and potential actions to improve and ensure FM is an enabler of business success. Jack also will present on some FM operational models to consider to support that transition.

New regulations for building product information will commence on 11 December 2023. The new regulations have been made to provide building product users with information about how building products contribute to compliance with the Building Code. They place obligations on Aotearoa, New Zealand-based manufacturers, importers, retailers, and distributors. The regulations will commence on 11 December 2023, by which time manufacturers and importers must meet their obligations. The regulations apply to designated building products manufactured in, or imported into, Aotearoa, New Zealand, on or after 11 December 2023
Matthew Cutler-Welsh - What the Building Code is not doing for you or your clients

The real change to the New Zealand construction industry is coming in the form of MBIE’s Building for Climate Change framework. Homestar and the work of the Green Building Council are helping to prepare for this by focusing on the technical understanding and design solutions for all the current gaps in the New Zealand Building Code. These gaps exist, even with the current updates to H1, and in fact, some of the moisture issues may get worse with more insulation if no consideration is given to proper ventilation. This presentation will look at how to mitigate risks associated with internal moisture (E3), ventilation (G4) and interior environment (G5) when implementing updates to H1. We will also cover some of the other ‘black holes’ of the building code and some of the emerging tools, calculators and terminology you need to know in order to design and build the healthy, efficient and low-carbon homes that Kiwis need.
