NZGBC Panel - Better Buildings with Sustainability
12pm-1pm

Panelists: Bobby Shen - NZBGC, Business Development Manager for Exisiting Buildings, Mark Sinclair - FM Concepts, Bridget Pyc - Property Sustainability & Relations Advisor at Samson

Aotearoa's built environment is responsible for 20% off the country's greenhouse gas emissions with a significant portion coming from the ongoing operation of existing buildings. With New Zealand's decarbonisation commitments, the rising cost of carbon-intensive activities and the government and financial sector signalling more scrutiny on the sustainability reporting, understanding the performance of a property portfolio is crucial for becoming more climate change ready.

The focus on this session will be on a facility manager's role in sustainability, particularly around monitoring how buildings are performing. A brief presentation will provide some context on how we have to look at existing buildings, risk management in relation to climate change, and cover the role of third-party certified rating tools to gauge where improvement and investment should be directed to create better outcomes.

Our panelists will provide the real-world perspective working in the facility management space. The conversation will look at their continuous improvement regimes, sustainable management practices and tangible steps that property and facility managers can take away with them to enrich their work.

Fit-for Purpose Indoor Environments – Changing the Conversation to embrace our new reality
2pm-3pm

Lance Jimmieson - Director of Jackson Engineering, Robert Mannes - Director of 22 Degrees

HVAC Systems are an increasingly key ingredient to the success or otherwise of our commercial building stock.

Embracing hybrid working, addressing concerns around Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), the need to reduce our carbon footprint are seemingly opposing forces in the drive towards creating ‘Fit-for-purpose’ buildings.

The changing landscape is putting the spotlight on traditional approaches to creating Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems that meet the current and future needs and concerns of building owners and tenants alike.

A ‘Change in Conversation’ is required at the investors table, around the design table and among FM professionals if the conversation around the water cooler in the many tenancies across the country is to remain positive.

Join this presentation to understand some of the concerns and drivers pushing for a more considered approach. Gain industry leading insights into what needs to change in order to achieve ‘Fit for Purpose’ solutions to these issues.

Determining The Charging Capacity Your Facility Needs
3:15pm-4pm

Glenn Inkster - e-Mobility Division Manager, TransNet NZ Limited

We inherently lean toward ‘bigger is always better’.  With EV charging infrastructure that’s not always the case and in some instances, this way of thinking leads to unnecessary expense building something that simply isn’t required.  Enabling people to easily work out the EV charging capacity they need, without having to get technical with kw / kwh / amp / kVa etc is key and we will work through doing just that!  With a firm understanding of EV charging basics, you’re in a better position to truly understand what capacity your facility is actually going to need (taking in to account the ability to futureproof) and make an informed commitment to get that infrastructure.  Simple things like the way parking spaces are planned (angle, parallel etc) and how to best position sprinklers/cable tray to have it ready for the inevitability of EV charging infrastructure being installed can be the difference between a fast, easy, inexpensive install or a long costly and invasive one. We work through the process to make your carpark area ‘EV ready’ and most importantly what that actually means.  Part of this planning and understanding of exactly what is required is the reason single phase charging is more flexible and lower cost than three phase charging.

Building Upgrades and Remediations: Fit Out is Flash and HVAC Cool, but What About the Building Envelope and Enclosures?
10:30am-11:30am

No, not the envelope that goes through NZ post, but rather the building envelope or enclosure. The parts of the building that keep the outside out and the inside in. Most often, building upgrades and remediations focus on the fitout of the interior and possibly upgrades to the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, but what about the walls, windows, roof and insulation? Many older buildings have hot spots in the summer, cold parts in the winter, and even those pesky reoccurring leaks that just can’t seem to be fixed. New plant, ducts and vents could help with comfort (but uses heaps of $$ on electricity. New sealant and/or a fresh lick of paint might help for a little while, but it can only do so much and doesn’t come with any energy savings. Have you ever thought of a more substantial upgrade? Join Peter as he talks about the different parts of the building enclosure that can and should be repaired and upgraded during a building renovation to make for a more comfortable, desirable, and energy efficient building which will make it more durable and profitable long term. With examples for inspiration, he’ll talk about some different options of good, better, and best when it comes to improving the building from the outside in.

Securing your Security – Cyber Security for Access Control Systems
12pm-12:45pm

Logan Woods - Principal Security Consultant at Aura Information Security, a division of Kordia

Modern building access control is increasingly linked to an organisation’s corporate IT systems. Whether for management, reporting, or integration with other systems, secure access control now requires careful consideration of the cyber security implications of these connections.

In this talk, you’ll hear from a professional (fully authorised!) burglar about common misconfigurations, how we exploit those to gain access to commercial premises, and how you can better secure your own access control system.

How Smart FM and AM Data Supports Metlifecare Growth Strategy & How to Engage Effectively with Key Stakeholders
1pm-1:45pm

Jack Crutzen - Director of PRISMA Facilities Management , Peter Wyatt - Senior Facilities Manager for Metlifecare

Jack Crutzen will advise on the value of FM and AM maturity review and how they give insight into improvement areas in the FM/AM/Procurement and the wider business. This presentation will present how to engage with senior management, support and influence decision-making, set and support FM strategies to help business growth, which tools and techniques have been used, and how data was presented pragmatically to engage with the wider business. This presentation gives insight into a multi-faceted approach such as: setting strategic objectives, developing a project approach, communication and engagement, building a team for success, collecting and using data and developing FM, AM and maintenance plans, as well as creating procurement benefits.
